Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit to continue repairing strained bilateral ties. The meeting took place in New Delhi during Xi’s first visit to India in seven years. Relations deteriorated after a 2020 border clash killed soldiers from both countries. India and China share a long, poorly demarcated border where military deployments have remained a source of tension.
The two governments have taken steps to reduce friction along disputed sections of their Himalayan frontier. Modi and Xi publicly emphasized the value of stable relations between their countries. Leader-level meetings can authorize practical talks even when underlying territorial claims remain unchanged. BRICS gives both governments a venue to coordinate on global governance while pursuing separate national interests.
Xi called for high-quality cooperation and a greater role for the Global South. Both countries are founding members of BRICS and major economies with extensive trade ties. India also maintains expanding security ties with the United States, Japan and Australia.
Their strategic competition also involves neighboring states, technology, manufacturing and influence in international institutions. The meeting produced diplomatic signals of cooperation rather than a final settlement of the border dispute. China’s economic scale makes the relationship important to regional supply chains and investment. Public statements did not establish a timetable for resolving remaining border deployments or territorial claims.
The practical baseline is the military posture created after 2020, not the tone of a single meeting. Any durable change would appear in patrol arrangements, troop locations, border infrastructure or formal agreements. Commercial measures offer another observable track because restored flights, visas and investment reviews can proceed separately from territorial talks, allowing limited normalization even while the frontier remains disputed.
