Indonesian rescuers searched the Java Sea for about 140 passengers and crew after a ferry carrying more than 240 people overturned in bad weather. Authorities reported that 102 people had been rescued and one body recovered. The vessel’s manifest listed 243 people, including 213 passengers and 30 crew members. The ferry was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin on Borneo. The captain reported rough seas with waves reaching about 3 meters before sending a distress message. The distress report said the ship was listing before later information indicated it had overturned. Authorities received the operator’s report about two hours after contact was lost near 2 a.m. An overturned vessel can leave survivors in the water or trapped in areas that are difficult to reach.

The last known position was about 148 kilometers from a pier in Banjarmasin. Rescue agencies mobilized ships, personnel and other available assets while monitoring weather conditions. Initial casualty and survivor counts frequently change during large maritime rescues. The vessel’s condition, exact number aboard and causes of the overturning were not yet confirmed.

The reported two-hour interval between lost contact and the operator’s notification is one part of the developing timeline, not yet a finding about responsibility. Search planners must combine the last known position with the time of capsizing and expected drift. The manifest discrepancy common to some Indonesian ferry operations adds another uncertainty because rescuers may not know the final number aboard until survivors and families are reconciled.
