The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill planned an early-morning stair climb at Kenan Stadium, while Garner scheduled a ceremony with a local survivor and recovery worker.
Holly Springs prepared a display of 343 fire flags, 72 police flags and eight EMS flags representing first responders killed while serving during the attacks. A separate Tunnel to Towers stair climb is scheduled Saturday at 150 Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, extending the observance into the weekend.
The Triangle’s events combine formal mourning, first-responder recognition, physical memorials and public service rather than relying on one regional gathering. Several programs are open to the public, but times, registration requirements and age rules vary by organizer and location. North Carolina State University also planned to mark the anniversary at its Friday football game against Richmond by wearing black camouflage uniforms honoring military personnel and first responders.
