The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing surveillance video that shows plainclothes officers taking two patrons to the floor and handcuffing them inside a Raleigh bar. The encounter occurred about 1:40 a.m. at Alchemy on Glenwood Avenue during a joint operation involving Wake County Alcoholic Beverage Control agents and sheriff’s deputies.
Both patrons were at least 21, and neither was charged after the physical encounter, according to authorities interviewed by WRAL. Wake ABC’s law-enforcement chief said the patrons resisted identification checks and that the officers’ response was justified.
The bar’s owner and employees disputed that account, saying the patrons appeared confused about the identity of the plainclothes officers and questioning why the encounter escalated. About 50 other people were charged during the wider operation, but the two men visible in the recorded takedowns were not among those charged.
Glenwood South has been a focus of city efforts addressing underage drinking, disorder and late-night safety, drawing multiple agencies into enforcement operations. Video can establish movements and timing but may not capture all spoken commands, badges, prior contacts or what each participant could perceive. An internal review can examine policy compliance separately from any criminal or civil assessment of the same conduct.
Wake ABC identified its agents and sheriff’s deputies as the officers involved, giving the review a defined set of participating agencies rather than leaving the plainclothes personnel unidentified.
At the edition deadline, the full unedited video, officer reports and interviews with the two patrons were not all available in the initial public account. The next documented developments will be the sheriff’s findings and release of relevant policies or body-camera material and whether either patron files a complaint or further evidence changes the agencies’ account.
