Wake County approved emergency funding after engineers found structural problems serious enough to keep students and staff out of three elementary schools. Durant Road, Davis Drive and Creech Road elementary schools cannot reopen until structural work is completed, leaving families close to start dates without final locations.
The Wake County school board unanimously approved emergency repair funding Monday. The affected campuses are Durant Road Elementary in Raleigh, Davis Drive Elementary in Cary and Creech Road Elementary in Garner. District engineers said the buildings cannot be occupied until repairs are complete.
Durant Road's year-round calendar begins July 30, while the other two schools are scheduled to open August 24. Summer programs were moved, and alternate opening-day locations had not been finalized. The three buildings were constructed in the early 1990s from related plans. The district has a large maintenance backlog, though not every deferred project represents a structural danger.
The decision affects opening-day transportation, childcare and instruction while exposing the operational cost of deferred maintenance in a fast-growing school system. Families need operational answers in addition to a funding vote. Transportation routes, meals, special-education services and staffing all change if a school opens elsewhere, and the district must communicate those decisions early enough for households to plan.
Settling and cracking require engineers to distinguish cosmetic wear from failures that affect load paths and safe occupancy. Repair scope, causes, total cost and campus-specific completion dates were not final. That distinction matters because a current report should not turn an unresolved point into a conclusion.
Watch for reopening dates and temporary-school plans for each campus. Watch whether inspections expand to other schools built from similar plans. Those developments will show whether today's action changes durable conditions or remains an announcement whose practical effects are still incomplete.
